In the afternoon, I drag them away from The Original Carlo, which now has enough cards pinned up to make it look like flaking skin after a horrific sunburn. “Homework time. Get in there and get it done.”

At five o’clock, I load them into the Toyota and take them to their mother’s.

“What do you want us to do on the case tomorrow?” Kelly asks.

“Nothing.”

“Nothing? You got to be kidding, Dad!”

“If I need anything, I’ll call you.”

“Why don’t you give us some of those bugging devices we can secretly plant on people and track where they go?” Kelly suggests.

“Or show us how to tap into their cell phones and record their conversations?”

“We could measure people’s footprints.”

“Or dust for fingerprints?”

“If I need you, I’ll call you.”

“Dad, that’s like being put on hold,” Kelly says. “I hate that.”

She has no clue just how much she could hate being put on hold and I hope she never has to find out.

I pull into what used to be my driveway. I get out of the car, give the girls each a kiss, and tell them I love them. As I watch them run through the open front doorway, I feel a very strange sensation go through my entire body. The feeling must be from the crystal pyramid my ex is wearing on her head.
